Alluvian Art Collection
Visions of the Delta. Some see it as a virtually flat landscape littered with catfish ponds and cotton fields, yet nothing could be farther from the truth. Seemingly endless landscapes where one can see where the land meets the sky in every direction produce a kaleidoscope of color and imagery for the artist who chooses this unique land for their inspiration.
The Alluvian, a pillar of uniqueness in an area which is already intrinsically unique, required a tie to the land which is its heritage. This was accomplished by the art and photography which was commissioned specifically for the hotel. Mississippi artists, or those with Mississippi roots, were asked to submit samples of their work to identify those with a contemporary, transitional style. After selecting the artists, they were given a theme. The Alluvial Plain, from which the namesake of the hotel was derived. The artists were then given a size and asked to submit a to-scale sketch of their interpretation. The sketches were reviewed and after approval the paintings were commissioned.
The black and white photography for the guest rooms and corridors was selected by the same process. The subject matter remained as interpretations of the Alluvial Plain. The photography for the corridors is arranged so that the 2nd floor consists of images of the ground and earth. The 3rd floor images depict where the earth meets the sky. And, the 4th floor images consist mainly of the point where the landscapes transform to skyscapes. Thus, the photography depicts the land ascending with the floor of the building.
We invite you to stroll the lobbies and halls of The Alluvian Hotel and Spa to enjoy the award-winning Alluvian Art Collection. Each Mississippi artist created an inspirational piece that represents the Delta and its’ unique culture. Use this guide to gain further insight into the Delta and what makes it so special.
